Starting a Review
WELCOME to this page where you will find information about the process of registering, conducting and writing up a BEME review.
You can discuss your ideas for a review topic and how to find others interested in joining you in this work with Prof Marilyn Hammick, the BEME Consultant. One way of finding colleagues with the same interests is by posting a message on the BEME listserv. Contact BEME to join the listserv.
Once you have identified a topic and have found others to work with you, you need to complete a BEME protocol. This is a brief summary of what you plan to do: including the review question, team of reviewers and a brief overview of how to plan to conduct the review. It should be no more than 2 pages and examples of protocols for reviews currently in progress are available.
Once the protocol has been accepted it will be posted on the BEME website. We also ask for annual updates on the progress of your review and many review groups present work-in-progress at AMEE annual conferences.
There is a Guide to assist review groups and email/telephone support is also available. Some review groups have identified funding for training and details of this are available from Marilyn. The website also has a prototype coding sheet and a guide for using this. Review groups most often use the prototype to help them tailor a coding sheet to their particular review topic.
Guidelines on writing up your review are also available and you can also discuss this with Marilyn. Following peer review BEME reviews are published in Medical Teacher and as individual BEME Guides. All reviews appear in full on the BEME website with a short key messages paper and links to other resources related to the review topic. Sessions at the AMEE annual conference are set aside for reviewers to present and discuss completed reviews.

This is the first version which was adapted for use by the early review groups. Each group has prepared its own coding sheet, which may be considerably different from this one.
